Principal's Report
Welcome!
Welcome to a new school year! The Geelong High School community extends a warm welcome to all students and their families, particularly students and families new to the school, and to our new and returning members of staff. New staff at Geelong High School are: Brennon Reusch (VCAL/PE) and Jonathon Panozzo ( Sci/Math). A number of other positions are currently being advertised and will be determined in the coming weeks. We also welcome back Doug Mann (drama), who returns from leave.
2018 finished on a very positive note with our Annual Music Evening being held in our own, newly refurbished CA Love Hall after a couple of yers at Costa Hall. Our annual Awards Night was also held in the CA Love Hall with a large and supportive crowd in attendance. Our Dux for 2018 was Megan Smith. Congratulations to Megan on an amazing year. I am also pleased to report that the vast majority of our year 12 graduates have found places in their desired courses.
Parents & Friends
Our fantastic Parents & Friends would like to welcome all parents, particularly those new to the school and invite you to get involved. The Parents & Friends meet twice per Term at 5.30pm on the Monday of the week prior to School Council (held on Thursday’s). The P & F have been involved in many major projects with the school and play a key role in fundraising work to support the many great programs the school offers. Our first major fund-raiser for the school will be the Election Day BBQ on a date to be announced in May this year.
School Council Elections 2019
Would you like to nominate for School Council?
School Council resolved at its December meeting of 2018 to have the new School Council for 2019 in place for the March meeting. We are therefore calling for any interested and energetic parents, community members, students and teachers to fill the three parent vacancies, two community vacancies, one student vacancy and two teacher vacancies. Retiring councillors may be eligible for re-election.
School Council President Georgia Richards and I would love to hear from any one prepared to nominate for the vacancies. Being a member of Council means more than attending a meeting once a month. It is a real opportunity to participate in developing policy and having direct input into the decision-making of the school at a very exciting period in the school’s development. Demanding certainly, but also richly satisfying.
School Council, staff and students generally, achieved an enormous amount in 2018 including obtaining additional funding of approximately $2.2 million for the school rebuild (enabling the third stage to become a reality); progression of the AMP (rebuild) and significant progress in implementation of the school’s Strategic Plan. Council looks forwarded to 2019 as we take possession of the second stage of the rebuild mid-year and commence stage three. We also launch into the third year of our four year Strategic Plan on the back of some significant gains in 2018.
Our focus in recent years has been on the embedding of our Vision & Values, the embedding of Positive Education into the curriculum and a strong focus on improving teaching and learning. While the vision and Values and positive Education are becoming embedded the strong focus on improving teaching and learning will remain our priority in 2019. We will also continue to embed our new communication strategies including a strong focus on the use of Compass (administrative and communication tool), our new website and the use of Facebook.
We need people with drive and ideas to help the school achieve its Vision.
Thursday February 21st, is the last meeting of our current Council. There are 6 parent representatives, 5 teacher representatives, 4 Community reps (including two School Captains) and 2 student reps on council. Representatives are elected for two years with about half the representatives retiring each year, to maintain continuity of council.
Elected members continuing for 2019 are:
Parents
· Ms Georgia Richards
· Mr Paul Henshaw
· Ms Michelle Steans
· Joanna Green
Staff (DET Employees)
· Ms Bernice Brown
· Mr Doug Mann
Student
· Lachlan Davis
Those retiring after their term has expired and eligible for re-election in 2019 are:
Parents
· Fiona Chipperfield
· Neil Collins
Staff
· Mr Ken Stewart
· Mr Steven Brown
Student
· Holly Moloney
Nomination forms may be collected from the General Office in the week commencing 4th February, 2019

School Production 2019 'Crazy for You' Underway!

The 2019 School Production of ‘Crazy for You’ has begun rehearsals and is powering towards it’s opening night in Term Three. 55 students of all year levels are working together to bring you this traditional style musical packed with all the Gershwin brothers’ best songs. Late last year, those interested in the show undertook tap dance lessons in a bid to add this style to our show. Students picked up this skill using their determination, grit, and perseverance – and the results so far have been pretty incredible. Students are rehearsing up to five times a week, dancing a number of styles, singing in three-part harmony, and having a blast. We can’t wait to share this show with you!

Year 8 Digital Technology

As part of the Geelong High School STEM program, the Year 8 Digital Technology class has been out at the new Geelong Technical School. Unlike traditional technical schools, this one is more of a digital technology school, with plenty of gadgets and devices to tinker with and learn from.
During the session at the Geelong Technical School, the Year 8 students built robots, coded them, then battled them against each other in the culmination of the days activities, the ‘Robot War’.
The students learnt to collaborate and solve problems using the design process, which is ultimately a process of trial and error until success is achieved.
A great day was had by all.

Library News

Welcome to 2019, a new year and new opportunities to connect with people (familiar and new). The Library is a safe space for all students at Geelong High to either take some time out or interact with other students during the recess and lunch breaks, or before and after school.
This year we will continue our weekly sessions with Toon Club (Tuesday at lunchtime) and Manga Club (Wednesday at lunchtime), with both sessions being held in Room 26. All are welcome! There will also be lots of opportunities for shared reading experiences with our Storytimes (once per term) and for creating with cardmaking, origami folding and jewellery creation scheduled in first semester. The first of these sessions will be Valentine card making on Thursday 14 February.
We have increased our loan time for books borrowed from the Library – we now have a four week loan period. Students may have up to five books out at one time, and there is no limit on the amount of books they can borrow over the year. As we are continually adding to our collections, with around 10 new books added per month – there is no shortage of reading material!
We are look forward to a busy and productive year with the future move to our new Library space when the second stage of the Whole School Rebuilding Project is completed. This will mean many more exciting opportunities to engage students with reading and to help develop a love of language in a fun and positive way. Until then we will continue to make the best use of the space we have to provide a friendly and welcoming service to the Geelong High School Community.

As the school year closes it is appropriate to reflect on the event of the year. While for me, personally, it has been a tragic year, I am pleased to report that our school continues to prosper and move forward.
As we do each year at this time we recently welcomed our new cohort of year 7 students for 2019 at the Orientation Days. We look forward to including them in our positive Geelong High School culture for the next six years.
With VCE exam results out tomorrow and the Awards Evening next Monday (17 December) we have reached the culmination of the school year. The Awards Evening returns to our own C.A.Love Hall after two years at Costa Hall due to the rebuilding works. This evening is a wonderful celebration of our students’ achievements as well as our achievements as a school community.
Please note that we will not be sending out a hard (paper) copy of reports this year. All reports will be available on Compass from 21 December (last day of term). A paper copy can be made available in the new school year (29 January 2019) by arrangement.
We are saying good-bye to a number of retiring staff, some of whom have been long-term servants of the school, and welcome several new members of staff. A sincere thank you and best wishes to Ruth Higginson. Ruth was appointed as an AP in 2010 and was also Acting Principal for six months. Barry Gillard’s commitment to Geelong High spans three decades. As a highly talented and nationally recognized artist in his own right Barry has taught art to generations of Geelong High School students. Glenn Taylor is retiring as one of the elder statesman not just of Geelong High School but of the teaching profession in general. One can only admire the dedication of someone who is able to maintain the commitment and energy to continue in a rewarding but challenging profession into their eighties. We wish each of these people a well-deserved retirement.
New staff joining us in 2019 are Jonathon Penazzo and Brennon Reusch with one or two appointments pending. A warm welcome to these staff members.
I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of our School Captains – Ella Schulze-Willey and Sam Clarke, and also Abbey Butler and Sebastian Miloradovic as Vice Captains. These are truly wonderful young people and reason enough alone to feel optimistic about the future. It has been a pleasure working with them.
To students leaving the school I wish you all the best in life and remember John Schaar’s words – “The future is not some place we are going, but one we are creating”. Please connect with our Silver Gulls Alumni and return to let us know what you are up to.
To staff – Thank you for your great work this year. I wish you a well-deserved and restful vacation and look forward to working with you in 2019.
To students, parents and friends of the school, have a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year.
See you all in 2019!

GPEP Anglesea Camp

The Year 9 GPEP Program have celebrated Semester Two with a two-day camp in Anglesea. Students volunteered with the Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club and Great Ocean Road Coastal Committee and spent the morning at the beach with the Anglesea Kindergarten.
The students were tasked with planning and setting up their own tents, bedding, budgeting, shopping and cooking their own meals.
Mr Ayerbe and Miss Yee would like to congratulate the group on a wonderful semester of hard work and sensational achievements.

Library News

Whilst we do not loan Library books over the Summer Holidays, it is important that good reading habits, that have been developed during the school year, are not ‘lost’ over the break. All year levels have at least one novel to read next year and it is really valuable for individual learning and comprehension that students read the book/s at least once before they start to discuss it in class next year.
If you are looking for reading material your local branch of Geelong Regional Library (including the newly opened Leopold branch - at 31-39 Kensington Road, Leopold) has extensive collections covering every imaginable topic (and format) you might like such as novels, non-fiction, magazines, ebooks, audiobooks. Membership is free and open to all people aged 18 and over. Children will require a parent or guardian to join on their behalf. They also run an extensive program of activities to suit children, young adults and adults, including a Summer Reading Club that children of all ages can join for free. Children read lots of books and collect fun prizes over the Summer break. Visit www.grlc.vic.gov.au or visit your nearest branch for more details.
Ms Mcclusky and Ms Spurr would like to thank the wider school community and particularly our Library community for being with us on the journey this year. It has been a long and often bumpy journey but with respect, resilience, perseverance and positivity we have all made it to the end of the year. We are especially grateful to our student helpers who have provided invaluable assistance with running our regular weekly programs and occasionally helping out with shelving!
We look forward to seeing everyone again in 2019, and to meeting our new Year 7 students.
'We wish you all a wonderful Festive Season and a very Happy New Year.'

Speaking of Sustainability

Be a part of the GHS Green Team
Are you interested in the Environment?
And working together with other like-minded students to improve the school and our world?
This year GHS has been working towards reinvigorating the Green Team and putting together plans for 2019. We now have a core group of Year 12 and Year 8 students meeting regularly to discuss how we can reduce our environmental footprint.
Some plans for next year include:
Continuing with our campaign to recycle batteries as well phones for gorilla habitat;
Raising money for our nude-food only eating area;
Introducing a workable and sustainable soft plastics recycling scheme;
Continuing with our Plogging sessions;
Having an exclusive Geelong High School Enviro-Week in Term Two.
While we have many other ideas in the pipeline, the Enviro-Week in Term Two promises to be a big event and should go a long way to getting our environmental messages out there.
Please take some time to read the below excerpt from a Year 8 Student, Thomas Brown, that is an inspiring piece of writing.
We are seeking students to join the campaign to help shape policy, spread the message and plan activities. Could you make a difference?
If so, why not get involved next year? You don’t have to attend all meetings in order to make a difference.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Smartstart
Year 12 exams have finished and we have now moved into exam mode for years 11 and 10. In order to maximise the available time following the exams period it has been customary for schools to begin working on the next year’s program in advance. We refer to our program as Smartstart and all students in years 10 and 11 (and some year 9 students) do the step-up into VCE to give them a flying start for the year to come. These students are working hard to come to grips with the demands of VCE.
P & F Election Day BBQ Fundraiser
We had a very successful election day Sausage Sizzle (with onions) on Saturday with over $1000 being raised. My thanks to the dedicated team of Parents & Friends who helped out on the day (Jan Clarke, Wendy & Allen Warren, Mel Telfer, Anne Blamey and Robin Eyers, Katherine Parrington, Lindsay Mole, Lachlan Davis (student), Ken Stewart and Steve Brown (staff). My thanks also to the parents who provided delicious cakes and slices for sale. The funds will go towards purchasing new furniture for the foyer within our new administration office area, once completed.
Election Result
The Andrews Labour government victory ensures that the third stage of our rebuild will be completed in 2019 or early 2020 following a pre-election commitment to provide funds to complete the project upon re-election.

A Great Debate

Following a successful year with the graded debating season, Term three & four saw Geelong High School field three teams of Year 7s and 8s in the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) Junior Secondary Program (JSP) hosted by Clonard College. The JSP consists of an initial training session, three friendly debates, a humorous demonstration debate and a follow-up training session. The trainers lessons and adjudicators’ feedback were very thoughtful and encouraging, and our junior debaters were able to take home valuable suggestions for improvement.
While our teams ranged from those who had competed in debating at primary school to those who had done a little in class to those who had never debated before, everyone gained knowledge, skills and experience throughout the process. It was especially rewarding to see at least two of our very apprehensive team members bravely speaking publicly under a great deal of initial trepidation. We always knew they would have the ability to create strong arguments, but to see them overcome their fears through the respect and positivity of their team mates and by their own great effort exemplified the values of our school. Well done!
Congratulations to our JSP teams:
GHS-1: Harold Walker (8BB), Aiden Prins (8CB), Erica Thyer (8LB), Cole Malcolm (8BA)
GHS-2: Bianca Janse Van Vuuren (7CA), Charlotte Shaw (8BB), Maya Bronszewski (7LB), Chloe Ryan (7CA)
GHS-3: Thomas Short (7CA), Alex Aidt (7CB), Caitlin Patten (7CB), Cooper Evans (7LB), Kailan Maas (7LA)
The Year 8s in the group are keen to progress to ‘D’ Grade (Year 9 and below) debating next year, which will add a second team to that level at GHS. Our Year 7s will have the option of stepping up to ‘D’ Grade in both the level of skill and of commitment, or they can further developing their abilities in the JSP for a second year. Further details, including dates for next year’s graded season, can be found at dav.com.au/schools/dates.php.
Feel free to contact me if you would like to participate at any level. In the meantime, here is a recent TED talk by a former Canberra school student that challenges us to consider the value of debating and how to argue with an open mind and a view to finding agreement: TED: How to disagree productively.
Finally, I’d like to acknowledge those who have supported the program. First, I’d like to thank Debating & Public Speaking Captain Heath Bayfield (11LB) for his enthusiastic and dedicated approach this year, of which I’m sure we’ll see much more as he steps into the role of School Co-captain alongside fellow debater Ebony Storrar (11BB). Many thanks to the teachers who have accommodated our need for training sessions during Home Group and occasional class time and who have offered ideas and assistance to the students, and even some healthy debating competition! (Thanks, Mr Langdon and Ms McClure!). Particular thanks to Ms Sharon Hultqvist who, for several years before me, co-ordinated and trained the graded debating teams, no doubt helping to build their skills and confidence. I’d also like to thank the parents who have supported the program by taking their children to and from the venues, and observing and encouraging our debaters.
And to all our debating students who have shown commitment to their teams, an effort to learn more about the method, manner and matter of debating, a desire to achieve a high standard, and persistence when things seemed too difficult to overcome, again, well done!
I look forward to more next year!

Geelong High Rowing Squad return to the water after an absence of 15+ years.
It was great to see our rowing squad take to the water for the first time in many years last Sunday morning. We have a keen team of rowers who are making excellent progress in developing their skills. Our thanks to the Barwon Rowing Club for providing the opportunity and support to enable this to happen.
Staff, Student and Parent Opinion Survey Results all Positive
We received our Staff Opinion Survey results recently which, when added to the positive parent and student opinion data, paint a picture of our school heading in the right direction. With 59 of 61 factors measured in the Staff Opinion Survey showing improvement, we can be confident that staff overwhelmingly endorse the work being undertaken to improve teaching and learning.

Building Project Update 14 November 2018
The main focus has been on preparing the first floor slab for pouring and the installation of the air-conditioning system for the Kroger Building and the Year Seven building. This is being funded by the school at a cost of $750,000. This system will be powered by solar energy during the day from our own 10kw solar PV system.
The new heat pump air-conditioning system will both heat and cool buildings with a BMS (Building Management System) ensuring the most efficient use of electricity. It will bring in fresh air to mix with the conditioned air resulting in a much better environment. The $750,000 contribution by the school will pay for the system and provide excellent conditions in the Kroger Building and Year Seven building.
The first floor is currently being readied for the concrete pour.

GPEP Central Australia Camp

20 GPEP Students, Mr. Ayerbe and Miss Yee spent a week exploring Central Australia – including Alice Springs, Lilla and Yulara (Uluru). The students were open-minded, adventurous and completed a number of cultural activities.
Students slept in swags under the stars, walked Kings Canyon and Kata-Tjuta (The Olga’s) and tried Goanna, Kangaroo and Witchetty Grub. This experience is an opt-in for students completing the Year 9 engagement program to broaden their knowledge of Australia and challenge themselves to be independent and implement a number of life skills.

This experience is an opt-in for students completing the Year 9 engagement program to broaden their knowledge of Australia and challenge themselves to be independent and implement a number of life skills.

R U OK Film Making Workshop

We ran our R U OK Filmmaking Workshop yesterday and it was a great success!
The workshop was run by noted Australian Actor/Director Steve Bastoni (UNDERBELLY/WATER RATS/MATRIX RELOADED) and Actor/Director Frank Lotito (STINGERS/A SECRET LIFE OF US/GROWING UOP SMITH).
During the day over 20 students from Geelong High School and the community learnt the art of filmmaking by writing, directing and producing their own short film which explored issues of loneliness and social isolation.
It was a fantastic opportunity for students from Geelong High School to work with and learn from industry professionals with experience in making films and television shows both within Australia and Hollywood.

Year 8 BioLab Excursions

Year 8 BioLab Excursion
As part of our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) program at Geelong High School, Year 8 students have been visiting the BioLab in Belmont to undertake a program called 'Skin Deep'.
In this program, students learnt all about the largest organ in the human body and how it changes and reacts during sport and physical activity.
Students had the opportunity to use some really cool equipment like digital microscopes, data loggers, thermal imaging cameras and a device that estimates the surface area and mass of each person's skin.
STEM related skills are now required in 75% of jobs and this will increase over time as technology becomes an even bigger part of our lives. A lot of STEM related pathways offer large salarys, great working conditions and challenging work for the people that work in them.

It's a Bee Swarm!

On Monday 6 November, after school, a swarm of bees arrived and set up camp in the tree at the front entrance of the school.
Luckily Derek Ryan, who has been volunteering with us for the past eight years, came to the rescue and has been able to relocate the bees who will now be producing honey for a friend of his.

VCE Graduation & Exams
The VCE Graduation last Friday was as always a particularly enjoyable night for all concerned. Many people commented on the positive “vibe” of the evening. I spoke to many parents who were all very complimentary of the organisation and for the care and concern shown by the school over the past six years. The House leaders in particular spoke passionately of the wonderful relationships developed with this cohort. One of the great strengths of the school is the bond that develops between students and staff, with the houses as the key reference point. We wish them well for the exams and for whatever the future holds. My thanks to Trudy Cameron for her immaculate organisation of the night and to Chris Gemmill and Sarah Normington who have worked closely with the year 12s this year. Well done to all concerned.
The exams are off and running. Students are reporting feeling excited and anxious, which is only natural. The important thing now is that students feel they have given each exam their best effort.
Rebuild Funding Update
We are pleased to report that we have received a strong written commitment from Christine Couzens and the Andrews Labor Government of a further $3 million across Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College and Geelong High School to address cost overruns due to the discovery and removal of substantially more asbestos in the old buildings than was anticipated. Georgia Richards, as President, and the School Council have advocated strongly to achieve this excellent outcome.
P & F Election Day BBQ Fundraiser- 24th November – Help Wanted
Any parent or senior student who can spare an hour or two to help out with the BBQ on Election Day, please contact the Admin Office and register your name and preferred time please. This will be the P & Fs main fund-raiser for the year. It would be great to share the workload and make it a great success. Funds raised will go to furnishing the foyer to the new Office Administration Area of the Kroger Building currently under construction.

Here is the latest update on our building project from Assistant Principal, Ken Stewart.
I must admit, coming into Geelong High the other morning only to look up and see a 200 tonne crane lifting the concrete planks high above, and into place, was quite impressive. That job is certainly not for the faint hearted!
Pic No.1 - A 200 tonne crane was required to lift the hollow core concrete planks that are for the first floor of the Kroger Building
Pic No.2 - A hollow core plank about to be placed on the top of the old room 13
Pic No.3 - Looking North West on the newly placed first floor of the Kroger Building. The central courtyard atrium space is now clearly defined

Year 12 Celebrations

A time for reflection and fun for our Year 12's, Class of 2018, after celebrating their last day of Year 12 at Geelong High School.
There's nothing like letting one's hair down and the students certainly did that on Year 12 Celebration Day, Tuesday 23 October.
We wish all our Year 12 students the very best for their exams and for what may be ahead for them in the near future and beyond.
There is an old saying, 'a picture is worth a thousand words!' ...Enjoy!

Power of Engineering

On Wednesday 17 October, 13 girls from Geelong High School attended a “Power of Engineering” event at Deakin University. This initiative is aimed at engaging and inspiring young people to create the future and change the world through engineering. It was also hoped to expose female high school students to engineering and encourage them to consider it as a potential career choice. The group was adressed by Dr Collette Burke, Victoria’s Chief Engineer, who shared her experiences in engineering and working within the construction industry as well as her role within the State Government, in overseeing major projects. The girls then participated in workshops focusing on the future of public transport, car design & safety and robotics.

Principal's Report
Rebuild Update
You may have heard that due to the discovery of unanticipated additional quantities of asbestos within the Kroger (main) Building and associated latent conditions, the cost of construction has increased. This has resulted in the Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) placing a block on proceeding with Stage 3 of the rebuild, involving the removal of all remaining asbestos, refurbishment of the Vague and Winstanley Wings, landscaping and flood mitigation works, until Stage 2 is completed. The estimated cost of completing Stage 3 is an additional $3 million. School Council met with the local member, Christine Couzens MP, last night (Tuesday 16 Oct) to express its concern at the possibility that the project, as envisioned and communicated to the community, was potentially at risk of not being delivered. Ms Couzens’ response was positive in that she assured council that the Andrew’s Labor government will ensure that the project is finished as promised. She was very confident this issue can be addressed in the next state budget, if not before. We are waiting for confirmation of this commitment in writing in the next week.
VCE End of Year
The end of year, and school, is rapidly approaching for our wonderful year 12 students. They have been a delightful group throughout their time at Geelong High School and it will be sad to see them go. We are confident that they are “prepared for life”. I would like to express my gratitude to our fabulous School Captains, Sam Clark, Ella Schulze-Willey and Vice-Captains Abby Butler and Seb Miloradovic for their work as school leaders this year. They will be wonderful ambassadors for Geelong High School in the future. They have maintained the high standard we expect of our student leaders. Selection of next year’s school captains has begun and will be announced in the next newsletter.

Works are now beginning to accelerate after the interruption with the asbestos removal works. The cost of removing previously unknown asbestos has now exceeded $800,000. In terms of other costs associated with latent conditions we are still within contingency.
We have made approaches to the Victorian Schools Building Authority (VSBA) to have this cost taken out of the project and they have made approaches to the Minister, but we haven’t as yet had an acceptable response.
Christine Couzens has also been advocating on our behalf and she has been invited to a School Council meeting next Tuesday evening.
At the last Project Control Group (PCG) meeting the decision was made that we would instruct the builder not to do any planning or make any commitments for works beyond Stage two. This is to ensure that the builder does not commit to further costs associated with Stage three until we know where we sit financially. The overall project is currently sitting at 50% completed. When we reach 80% completion of Stage two we will see where we sit financially and make decisions about what we want completed within Stage three.
We are expecting the first floor to be put in place around the 22 October 2018. The builders are currently preparing the existing building to receive the hollow core concrete planks. Once these are put in place a concrete slab will be poured on top of them and then the structural steel will be put in place for the second level.
The ducting and air transfer units will be fitted after the first floor is poured.
The walkway around the courtyard on the first floor level is now taking shape along with the supporting columns. This view is looking south into the library from the courtyard. A glass wall will be place on the edge of the walkway so that you can look into and out of the new library.
Completion date for Stage 2A is now 30 May 2019. This means that we will move into the newly refurbished Kroger building on this date and then works will commence demolishing the Administration Building and completing the hard landscaping on the south side of Kroger.

Engineering Discovery Day at Deakin

On Monday 15 October, as part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) program at GHS, a group of 31 year 7 & 8 students travelled out to Deakin University, Waurn Ponds campus to take part in the 'Engineering Experience' day.
As part of this experience, students heard from engineering students and took part in a number of practical projects, building bridges to hold weight, buildings to withstand earthquakes and wind turbines that create electricity efficiently. They also had ...a tour of the great facilities out there, where they visited the high voltage lab, the virtual reality lab and other areas to get a feel of what university life might be like if they head down a STEM related pathway.
Jobs with a STEM focus are being created at a higher rate than what we can fill with qualified people. Students that choose this pathway will have access to jobs that are challenging, well paid and located all over the world. GHS recognises this and we are working hard to make sure all our students get as much exposure to STEM as possible.

Geelong Tech School Opening on 9 October 2018

Over the last three years Geelong High School, in collaboration with the other partner schools across Geelong, have helped plan for and develop the Geelong Tech School. This school is unlike regular schools, for a number of reasons. There won’t be any students enrolled at the Tech School, instead schools will book in groups of students to attend for a day or two as part of a bigger project that they’ll complete back at their home schools. The Tech School will also host millions of dollars worth of equipment and facilities that schools simply can’t afford on their own.
All of this work culminated today with the centre being officially opened by the Deputy Minister for Education, and our very own Geelong High School students helped to showcase the event. Ebony Storrar did a fantastic job as MC for the event, and Clare Adams, Brandon Richmond-Craig and Max Roncon all worked really well on projects in collaboration with students from Christian College which they demonstrated to principals, politicians, industry partners and other school leaders as part of today’s event.
The centre is one of 10 being opened across Victoria to help address the shortage of people trained in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) related fields. It is these fields that make up the majority of new jobs across Victoria, and across the world.
As part of the STEM program at Geelong High School, we will be sending a number of classes to the Tech School over the coming months and integrating the projects and activities into our already rich curriculum to help promote STEM and the job opportunities that these areas provide.

Japan Tour 2018

At the end of last term, with a small group of other students and two teachers, I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Japan on the 2018 Japan Tour. Departing on the September 14 (and narrowly avoiding typhoons in both Japan and Hong Kong) we set out for just over a week of exploring Japan.
Over the 10 days, we got to visit various famous places including Miyajima Island, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Part & Museum, Universal Studios, Kyoto Tower and the Fushimi Inari torii gates, along with discovering all the oddities and peculiarities of Japan. Personally however, my favourite part was the 3 night homestay in the small town of Ayabe. Split into pairs, we spent four days with a Japanese family with two of those days spent at the local school. As a part of this, we got to participate in an array of activities some including Aikido (a Japanese martial arts), Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), and a traditional Japanese tea ceremony dressed in kimonos. Not only did it allow me to practise by Japanese speaking and listening skills outside of the classroom environment, but it also gave me the opportunity to fully immerse myself into a traditional Japanese way of life.
I’d like to thank and acknowledge all of the work and time that Ms Jacques and Mr Simondson put into making the trip as great as it could possibly be, and I’d also like to thank all of the other students for making it such a memorable experience.
