Performing Arts

Geelong High School has an enviable reputation in the Performing Arts. Over the past couple of decades GHS has produced 100s of graduates who have succeeded to professional work as dancers, singers, actors, musicians, theatre technicians, teachers, writers, choreographers and directors.

Drama and Music studies occur at Shenton, a unique Performing Arts facility where our collection of heritage listed buildings, creates an inspiring atmosphere for creativity. No visit to Geelong High School would be complete without a tour of the Theatre with its state-of-the-art professional lighting system housed within a 1930s Baroque style church.

Dance

Dancers from all over Geelong flock to the brand new purpose built Dance Studio which accommodates V.E.T. dancers from all Geelong schools, providing them direct entry into the creative arts industry. Dance remains one of the most popular choices for students throughout their years at GHS.

Music

Geelong High School also boasts a vibrant music program that offers students instrumental tuition on all woodwind, brass and percussion instruments as well as tuition on voice, guitar, drums, violin and piano. The school has various ensembles – Junior and Senior Concert Band, Stage Band, VCE Ensembles, Rock Bands and Junior and Senior Choirs – and students are encouraged to participate in these groups. These ensembles perform at various school functions – school assemblies, concerts, productions – and participate regularly at Eisteddfods, community events and functions. The classroom music program is offered as part of the Year 7 program and students can choose music as part of the elective program leading onto VCE Music Performance. The classroom music program offers various activities to develop student’s practical, aural, theory, composition and analysis skills. Students use the following software – Sibellius, Acid Pro and Auralia to help support their learning.

Drama

Geelong High’s Drama department is alive and well, offering students of all year levels the chance to develop their skills as actors and theatre makers. Working with existing texts, and creating their own, Geelong High’s Drama students are encouraged to think about the world and how people behave in order to inform their performances.
