Higher Education Studies

Geelong High School allows students the opportunity to undertake Higher Education units as part of their VCE studies. Successful completion of two Higher Education units can contribute as a fifth or sixth subject in the ATAR calculation.

Higher Education in VCE

The Higher Education Studies in the VCE program is offered by Higher Education Institutions and is designed for independent, high-achieving VCE students. Individual students are able to choose the Higher Education Units that are linked to their Career Pathway and/or interest area. There are two types of Higher Education Units and please note some require Year 11 VCE subjects as a pre- requisite.

An Extension study:

  • Is equivalent in content and assessment in every respect to one or more current first-year university studies and constitutes at least 20 per cent of a full-time first-year university course
  • Is of a level for a high-achieving student and therefore is a clear advance on an identified linked VCE units 3−4 sequence and Commensurate in workload with an Additional VCE study
  • Is of a level that will normally allow the student, on successful completion, to proceed to second-year study at the higher education institution in that discipline

An Advanced Standing study:

  • Is equivalent in content and assessment in every respect to one or more current first-year university studies and constitutes at least 20 per cent of a full-time first-year course
  • Comprises curriculum not available in any current VCE studies and therefore is not linked to any current VCE units 3−4 sequence
  • Is of a level that will normally allow the student, on successful completion, to proceed to second-year study at the higher education institution in that discipline

Geelong High School students can study on the university campus which is a great way to immerse yourself in university life or online with all classes, seminars and resources instantly accessible. Each university will offer a range of opportunities and it is important that these are researched thoroughly.

Geelong High School will certify that selected students meet the guidelines provided by the Higher Education Institutions, which may include specific tests, submitting past results and character references.

Benefits of Higher Education Studies

  • Ease your transition into university
  • Challenge yourself by extending your level of learning
  • Study for free
  • The potential to boost your ATAR
  • Extend your learning network
