House System

Our school is organised around four Houses: Barwon, Corio, Leigh and Moorabool. These Houses are a critical part of our school community and pastoral care. Students remain in the same House for their entire time at Geelong High, and in doing so, form strong relationships with their Home Group Teachers, House Leaders and a strong sense of belonging with their fellow students.

House System History

Around 1925, the Houses were simply colours - blue, green, red and yellow. In 1930 the first House Sports Carnival was held and the House names were given: Barwon, Corio, Leigh and Moorabool. Then, for no apparent reason, in 1933, the Houses were combined into Barrabool (blue and red) and Corileigh (green and yellow). In 1947, the Houses reverted back to the four: Barwon (blue), Corio (green), Leigh (red), and Moorabool (yellow), and have remained as such. The House logos: Barwon Sharks, Corio Crocs, Leigh Devils and Moorabool Tigers were chosen in 2004.

Home Groups

Year Seven students are placed in House based Year Seven Home Groups on commencement at the school. Wherever possible they are placed in the same house as brothers or sisters who are, or have been students at the school. Moving into Year Eight and throughout the rest of our school, students strengthen the strong relationships built with the home group and house staff as Home Group teachers and house leaders play a major role in supporting students through their time at GHS. Home group is more than pastoral care. Students undertake Positive Education and Respectful Relationships programs, educational initiatives, private study and goal setting opportunities. Moving into their Senior Years of schooling, our students utilise Home Group to access particular types of programs, pathway and career options as well as additional support in their important final years.

Competition

The sense of school and house community and pride is built through a range of inter-house competitions including, swimming, athletics, cross-country and theatre sports.
