VCE VOCATIONAL MAJOR

The VCE Vocational Major (VM) is a vocational and applied learning program within the VCE designed to be completed over a minimum of two years. The VCE VM will give students greater choice and flexibility to pursue their strengths and interests and develop the skills and capabilities needed to succeed in further education, work and life.

It prepares students to move into apprenticeships, traineeships, further education and training, university (via non-ATAR pathways) or directly into the workforce.

The purpose of the VCE VM is to provide students with the best opportunity to achieve their personal goals and aspirations in a rapidly changing world by:

  • equipping them with the skills, knowledge, values and capabilities to be active and informed citizens, lifelong learners and confident and creative individuals
  • empowering them to make informed decisions about the next stages of their lives through real-life workplace experiences.

VOC MAJOR

The Geelong High School VCAL program is an innovative, practical and multi-disciplinary program for students who enjoy applied learning opportunities. Students have the potential to gain multiple qualifications including industry qualifications and improve their employability skills after school. The curriculum will tie in key units of VCAL with topics, projects and community programs that are relevant to the student while building on literacy and numeracy skills. Each student has the opportunity to complete Structured Work Placement for 25 days to establish industry networks and increase employment opportunities.

The VCAL program extends students to improve communication skills, self-esteem, team work, organisation and leadership skills. VCAL is an exciting opportunity for students who enjoy challenges and would like to make themselves more employable and prepared for work after school.

Award Winning Program

The Geelong High School VCAL program has successfully won the following awards for its innovative delivery:

  • VCAA Exemplary Personal Development Unit 1 And 2
  • VCAA Exemplary Work Related Skills Unit 1 And 2
  • 2006 VCAA VCAL Achievement Award For Partnership Development
  • 2010 VCAA VCAL Achievement Award For Program Development
  • NAB Schools First Award $40,000 For Community Partnership Award With Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving

Pathway Options on completion of VCAL

The VCAL certificate will give students practical work-related experience and qualifications that will be recognised by TAFE institutes and employers. Together these will help students move from school into work, an apprenticeship or traineeship and/or further training at TAFE..
