Wellbeing Support

Every member of the Geelong High School community has a right to fully participate in an educational environment that is safe, supportive and inclusive and we strive to achieve this for our students. Everyone deserves to be treated with care, respect and dignity. Students, staff and families are supported by our qualified wellbeing team who works with wider teams within and beyond our school to develop a school culture where all individual students matter, are valued, accepted and able to develop to their full potential.

Types of support:

  • Individual and small group counselling and programs
  • Assisting transition from primary to secondary school and pathways to post-compulsory schooling
  • Counselling for relationship issues (peers, family, teachers)
  • Mediation for concerns e.g. bullying, self-esteem, attendance, resiliency, grief or loss, family breakdown, anger management etc.
  • Restorative practices - Is a process used to repair relationships and ensure responsibility is taken and justice is served
  • Doctors In Schools (Pilot) Program - students have confidential access to a GP one day per week at no cost to the student/family
  • Academic progress and appropriate educational pathways
  • Student engagement and inclusion
  • Referrals to outside agencies including Headspace, The Geelong Project, School Network Support Staff For Assessment And Specialised Support/Counselling

Accessing Wellbeing Support:

Students and parents are able access wellbeing support by:

  • Self-referral by calling by the relevant House Office for a referral for an appointment (student) or a phone-call to the House Office (parent)
  • Referral By GHS staff: staff may contact the House Office to raise concerns about a student and seek assistance or request their attendance/support at a parent meeting

Outside agencies:

Contact to the school comes from agencies such as Headspace, The Geelong Project, paediatricians, SSSOs etc. seeking a team approach to supporting a young person. We also work with alternative education settings such as McKillop and Operation Newstart in supporting our students.

Students can self-refer to the Doctors In Schools GP or be referred via the Wellbeing Team.
